Hi all,
I’m trying to find some 100% clear white pine in 1×6 dimension to
finish some sills for Pella-like windows. And I’m having difficulty
in the Phoenix area. Even the specialty yards have only a clear
rotary cut sugar pine which I think would stain up awful.
So….does anyone know of a source; a good supplier of woods that I
can go to on the web, etc. and order up some? I’m getting tired of
looking and having the project delayed continually.
If not, can anyone suggest a different clear wood (basswood, etc) that
I might substitute without running into stain matching problems?
Thanks VERY much for any suggestions you can give.
Glenn

Hello again, glenn, there is a pine from New Zealand called Radiata pine that is readily available here in NW OH. Check with a local good lumber yard.

Try http://www.walllumber.com (That is Steve Wall Lumber in NC.)
Try a web search for white pine flooring, then talk to the high end flooring companies (mostly in the N. East) and see if you can get clear flooring without the relieved back. I would bet they could do it for you, although I'm sure at a premium. You could also get some clear flooring and run it through a planer to take off the back relief. Carlisle, Conklin, etc. are the types of companies I was thinking about.

How do you have rotary cut wood except for a veneer?
I wonder if you are using the wrong term?
Yes, I am. I guess the best description would be "non-quarter sawn"But I've worked with this cut of wood before. It doesn't have the
neat parallel lines of 1/4sawn, rather has wavy wilder bands. But
the wood I've looked at has big solid areas of the darker grain, like
4x6 ovalish areas. Perhaps non-1/4 sawn areas of trees with thicker
growth rings? Don't know, but that's not what I want and it's
what I've found at Lowes, HD, and a specialty hardwood place that
also carries pine.
That would be plain sawn or flat sawn.BTW on softwoods qtr sawn is often called vertical grain.
Are you looking for 8/4 for exterior historic sills, or 5/4 for interior millwork?
The white pine is a poor choice for exterior sill work, IMO
But maybe you can try woodweb
