I need advice on installing a new floor over an existing slab. The slab floor gets very cold in winter. I want to install either tile or laminate floor with maximum insulation and minimum thickness

I don't know of any way to insulate a tile floor without building up a new floor with 2x4 sleepers and 3/4" plywood plus typical underlayment for either vinyl or ceramic tile (very thick in either case)
A laminate floor would be your best bet. Pergo makes an underlayment called "wisper walk" that should provide insulation as well as sound reduction. Talk to your local flooring supplier for its insulation qualities.-John
*Morning David,Sounds like a job for cork floating floor panels. They are 1/2 thick, cork top and bottom, MDF t&g centers. The cork is used in place of styrofoam in European applications and returns your own body heat. Cost is about $4.50 Canadian and will outlast vinyl and will not mildew or harbour mold.Because it's a floating floor, it is not attached or glued in any way to the concrete. The panels are glued to each other via the t&g.Easy DYI project.Gabe
*Gabe- What's the brand name? They aren't available around here from any of my flooring suppliers-the only requests they have had are from DIYs that saw them mentioned on H>V. Maybe they're available in Cleveland(I'm in the Akron, OHarea) but I'm not willing to go too far out of my local area for materials, especially if they're new on the market. Thanks, John
*Hi John,Only know of one supplier for the States of Spanish cork floating floor, you can contact them at http://www.naturalcork.comThey are a lot more expensive than we sell it in Canada but have a good selection.Gabe
