What is the good and the bad of installing new 3/4″ white oak wood floor over existing 3/8″ oak floor. The existing sub floor is 3/4″ x 6″ at a 45 degree angle. What is the best method of installing over the existing 3/8″ wood floor?

Hi Kevin,
That 3/8" thick floor you're refering to wouldn't be a glued down parquet floor by any chance?
Gabe

Nope, strip oak flooring about 2" wide.

In that case, structurally, I would go with installation at a right angle to the existing.
Best of all, I would remove the existing and take the opportunity to check my subfloor before installing the new.

*Wow, what a hassel. All doors would have to be trimmed, and what happens when you or a subsequent owner wants to rip out the flooring and start anew, you'll have a giant gap at the bottom of the doors. All base and shoe moldings will have to be removed, or covered up in a funky way. All thresholds will have to be changed out.I'd rip out the old, check out and repair the old subfloor, install building felt under the new, and go from there. I am generally against installing anything over old, including vinyl flooring, roofing, tile, etc. Thats not to say it should never be done, but limited to areas or homes where you don't care about quality issues.

Plese advise me on the best method to use fastening a 1x4 yellow pine plank floor over concrete. If possible I wish to avoid sleepers or subflooring. If I use a floating style what type glue do you recommend for t&g? Any thoughts on 15# felt vs 6 mil. polyethelene for a vapor barrier?
Thank you very much,

Hi Bill,
Yes a floating floor (constructed of real wood throughout) would be recommended and common white carpenter's glue with at least a 4000 lb rating.
Poly over concrete floors work best and felt over wood.

*Kevin,Rip it up! It comes up fast.I can just hear the two floors squeeking from here. Put down some felt especially if you don't replace the subfloor as well.
*ITA - Is your flooring v-groove? The age of your subfloor makes me think so. This product is still available in quarter- and rift-sawn white oak (beautiful - beats red oak any day). The absolute advantage is that it is the right thickness and very beautiful premium grades are available - the disadvantage is that you're lucky to be able to sand v-groove even once (since the v- opens up). But how many times can you sand Pergo? The available material designations are (Firebird standard):5/16 x 1 1/2 QSWO; 1/2 x 1-1/2 QSWO; 3/8 x 3 RSWO (and QSWO) and you can also do 5/16 x 2 QSWO (special)
