I built a 2900 square foot home in St. Lawrence County in 2000. Not counting land, the actual cost was $80 per square foot of living space. The house had a basement and a two car garage, but that's not counted in the 2900 square feet, but the cost is.
I did some labor myself: all the wiring, ceramic tile, built the kitchen cabinets, front door, and garage doors. Flooring was tile, laminate, vinyl, and carpet. Trim was wood, cabinets cherry, oak, and zebrawood. Siding was Hardie Shingle, roof was architectural shingles, foundation ICF, R-21 walls, R-38 ceilings, Anderson windows and French door. Basement and garage unfinished. Three heating systems: forced air furnace, radiant floor boiler for the shop, and Vermont Castings gas stove as backup heat. Driveway was paved, lawn power raked and hydroseeded.
