What does it mean when builders talk about warranty on a new home construction? If you fire a builder and hire someone to finish your project, how does that effect warranty? WHat does one need to be especially aware of in switching builders?

Depends on the original terms. We have a clause in our contracts that absolves us from warranty liability under certain circumstances.( client non-performance, etc.)
What were the terms of the warranty with your first builder ?
Contentment is the happy medium.
You'll have to provide more information, because home warranties are regional things. For example, the "Atlantic Home Warranty" program in Atlantic Canada is utterly worthless, and is in reality a marketing tool by the builders, with absolutely no value to the homeowner.
Like my dad used to say, "A good car doesn't need a warranty."
