Can someone tell me why messages as old as Dec 1998 still come up being flagged as “new”, and messages added today aren’t? What’s up sysop?

There could be lots of different reasons. The most likely is that "New" really doesn't mean new. It really means unread. So if there's an old thread (say from 1998) that you haven't opened and looked through before then the software will list that as new.
