When I was at the Seattle JLC show I heard about a new online magazine for carpenters called www.thisiscarpentry.com.
The first issue has a articule on laying out stairs with a story pole.
I believe It is connected with Gary Katz & Jed Dixon.
The goal is to have more indepth articules not geared so much to beginners. The next issue is supposed to have an articule on carving a rising volute.

Cool - so now I can answer the question "is this trim installed upside down?". Interesting to see a melding of old school (paper turning metaphor) with new school (weg, videos, etc.) Looks really promising.
Interesting that I heard on the radio just this morning that PC Magazine is shutting down it's print edition and going completely on-line. Looks like Gary & company are on to something good. If they can keep the quality and diversity of the articles up I think they have a great chance of making a go of this.
Yeah, it'd be even better if I could actually read it, dammit. Idiot web designer apparently thinks everybody's on high speed.
If you can find it, I'd appreciate it if you could post the e-mail address of the editor. I saw they are looking for authors (on the thumbnails, the only part of the site I could get to load) but have no way to get in touch with them.

Sorry I can't help you about the website. I have to use a website guy for everything I do. When I talked to Gary Katz he said they were looking for people to write articules more advanced than what you normaly fine. If you go to his website you can email him direct.
One would assume that Gary Katz's website is http://www.garykatz.com?

If you talk to them about an article, tell them I'd be interested in doing a re-do so that people can actually read the thing. I think that's the point of magazines, isn't it? i went to the site and paged thru the mag,i don't know what happened but it jacked with my computer big time. finally got it rebooted up,hope that straightens it out????
if a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?
Paged through too --- until it hijacked my machine also.
Same - reboot. :(
It looks terrific but I want to add that it screwed up my computer... had to re-boot.
I'm trying to get it. I've got DSL and using Firefox but no luck yet. They could create a great product using Wordpress and have a hell of an online mag.--

Read through the first article and it looks great, THANKS for the link. Ive got broadband on a pretty good comuter and I can see where those who dont wouldnt be able to enjoy it. Itll be a be a good thing to do when I have a little more time, too bad the computer isnt in the bathroom, I get some of my best reading done there.
Just tried to view it and it would not load. I suspect that it is being re-worked.
It's still up. It's just a massive Flash file that's probably causing your connection to time out.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

I like the online mags content. The article on trim and moldings offered a lot of new information. With a DSL connection I didn't have too much trouble accessing it. At one point my Mac "locked up" and I got a "beach ball" instead of a cursor for what felt like five minutes. This was after flipping through 30 or more pages it suddenly bogged down.Fortunately the computer sorted things out on its own. I don't know if this is a mac vs pc issue or just a matter of giving it enough time.I tried to subscribe but it didn't work. I will read it again if I remember to check the site for a new issueKarl
Sounds interesting but I don't want to get locked up either. Good opportunity for guys to get some web exposure...unless everyone is too busy. Always sems to be the case when the internet is an open door in the construction field at the moment. Ten years it may be too late. Do they provide contact information with an article?
Flash...not many will see the site. Some flash is okay but all flash? They need a good serach engine optimizer dude?
Yeah, I'm on cable and the darn thing is timing out!
Seems perfect to me; a new carpentry magazine telling you that you need new tools before you even see it
All I got is..
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

I sent them off a note at the addy fatroman provided, and linked them to this thread so they could be aware so many of us had trouble and were interested.

Good thing you did. I'm a bit of a web dabbler myself (though you'd never know it by my own website :] ), and I know that all too many web developers got too caught up in fancy flash and javascript effects, they forget the main purpose of the website is making information accessable. Sometimes they don't realize that they are one of the few people actually able to view the site, and need someone to point it out.See my work at TedsCarpentry.comBuy Cheap Tools! BuildersTools.net
I think it's telling me I need a new computer!
Was getting it before, but now its timing out. Overloaded, dead server?
A computer was one of the tools I was thinking of, cable covers the other. But, in this case, it looks like them. Maybe the drain on their server will have them rethink flash.
I see so many people are having trouble, I guess its a bad idea to market a high tech magazine to tradespeople, most of us arent computer geeks. I guess im lucky- have broadband and bought a new computer last year.
It loaded up in less than 10 sec. and worked quickly and almost flawlessly. Almost because there are videos imbeded in the pages and only one of three I tried worked the others said it wasnt available. Without the setup I have theres no way I could put up with trying to load that thing.
Why cant they have a beta (or whatever they call it) version for it? Ive seen the option on other websites, for people with dsl or dialup or older computers? Then they would be able to reach their target market.
I've got a brand new iMac, and high-speed Comcast cable.Lot of good that does me for that alleged site. I'll try them again when I hear they woke up, and got real.Aitchkay

Gary Katz e-mailed me in response to my inquiry yesterday, and he says that this is the beta version, LOL.
He also told me Roe Osborne (of FHB fame) is working with him on it, 'preventing me from falling off a cliff'.
I'm glad Piffin sent them a link to this thread. The magazine is a great idea, but the first issue obviously has whatcha might call 'e-issues'.

There's some confusion here as to the use of "beta" in computer science. Beta refers to the second generation of a product released
for further development and de bugging based on usage by average users. You are participating in beta development through your feedback. Beta is not a different version with different features or based on a different format.Alpha is the first "working" generation that developers work on to develop the code, hardware, etc. It is generally not released to the public with open source being an exception.
now that I think about it I was thinking of a low bandwidth option in the begining of the websites. Not beta you get the idea
I dunno - guess you better send them a link to here. Upon looking over my emails this AM, I see I have a notice that the email I sent timed out unable to connect to thisiscarpentry.com so mine did not go thru.

Done. I am using the e-mail addy I found on Gary's personal website, not the one for ThisIsCarpentry.com. That one seems to be working okay.

My dsl is faster than my cable for the same price
Just tried the link at it said coming soon.
Really? I cant imagine anything faster than when most things happen instantly. I never have to wait for anyting. I guess my SIL pays half what I do for what they call road runner lite and its a little slower but not bad. I dont have the option here, if I couldnt have the great speed I have now I would get too frustrated.
It loaded and worked fine for me... yesterday (2 y.o. iBook with cable connection).
Today, it is just "Coming Soon"

It appears that I may have posted news about the site before they were ready for it.When it is up & running there is a good articule about story-poles for laying out stairs. In addition Jed Dixon showed his new approach to cutting stringers which is far more accurate & faster than any I've ever seen and so simple it'll make you want to slap you forehead for not thinking of it yourself.
The content looked very good... I expect that they will get the bugs worked out.I'm glad you let us know about it.
My apologies for all the trouble you folks have been having accessing the new magazine we've been working on. We didn't intend for the link to be shared just yet--we were circulating it privately among 'friends', working out the last bugs. Some of the links on the pages weren't working properly--links in articles to FHB online articles, to Tools of the Trade online articles weren't working at all, and that's part of the purpose of the magazine. And one of the illustrations was opening in a video partially off screen, so the controls weren't accessible! Typical problems and more, because the page flipping technology is still new, and that's the part that intrigued me in the first place--an online experience that reads like a book, with video and animation on each page, rather than a scrolling webpage. But the biggest problem you all had was bandwidth--since we didn't anticipate many visitors, we had the bandwidth set very low and the site crashed as soon as the address was posted on Breaktime. We should have it up and running in a couple more weeks, and I expect that it will load MUCH faster and run easier by then.Sorry for the frustration! It's been frustrating me, too--kind of like learning how to cut a straight line with a wormdrive.Gary
Gary, thanks for the update.
Please wander back over and post a link when you get it set up.
thanks!
