New Pocket Step Ladder for 2X Lumber

| Posted in Tools for Home Building on May 2, 2003 12:56pm

Anyone try one of those new “Pocket” step ladders? I came accross ths one on the net http://www.pocketladr.com/pages/1/index.htm and I saw that McFeely’s has an aluminum one for $19.99.

They look pretty handy, but I wonder just how safe they are. If nothing else, I like how they demonstrate it holding a spool of wire.

Seems like a good idea. The use that immediately came to mind was drilling holes and pulling wire in new house construction.

Currently we use a short, about 8", 3/4" auger bit on a 1/2" spade handle or angle drill. We have bits and extensions that would allow drilling top plates from floor level but, unless you have a lot in one area, the extensions tend to stay on the truck. We usually keep a 6' ladder handy but going, sometimes it seems a quarter mile walk, across the McMansion wastes time. Same with pulling wire.

I could see both my helper and myself keeping one of these devices hung off the belt where you could quickly slap it onto a stud to gain that extra 2' needed. It wouldn't help much in the middle of the rooms but many of these runs can be tossed and pulled before sending the helper up into the trusses to hammer in staples. It would seem easier than, but not entirely a replacement for, schlepping a ladder around.

They work pretty well, but get two of them. Of course if you're a tightwad like me. you have them made for about $5.00 each. I saw them about three months ago and took the catalog to the welding shop up the street.  Rob  made me two for two by fours and were going to get a couple more for two by six studs. Not as light wieght as the alum. ones but just as handy.

I was thinking that also. I could weld up a few out of scrap aluminum. Maybe even add a few features. I was thinking a spring clip on the face of the step would allow it to be easily slipped onto a tool belt or edge of a pocket.

Maybe another version designed, with a 'C' shaped claw, to stick out from the stud would be even more adaptable. The present design lies within the wall space and if the wall had sheathing installed the toe room would be limited. Of course how to grip the stud without having to tear off the sheathing or complicating the device too much.

how to grip the stud  Just pretned you're a plumber and drill some holes.Do it right, or do it twice.

Guys that swing a lot of wall panels use them to scoot the heavier walls around .

Makes an instant handle and when you get it into place use two to step up and nail off the top plate.

I blocked his worthless ass at least once.  Carpenty has many aliases.   In this thread there's a couple dozen at least, "Not Published" posts....................all in the last 24 hours.   That less than reliable spam blocker did work in their case.
