Planning and getting bids on a new front/wrap-around porch. Roof, but otherwise open-air. Basically, to me, a deck with a roof. Some GC’s insist on balloon framing (one post set in concrete up to roof), others will set a post to hold deck/decking, and build on the decking with next post to hold roof structure. Which is better building tech?
Any thoughts?!
Thanks!

Because there isn't any shear wall to prevent the porch from racking, I'd say that posts from the ground to the roof are better.
Of course, I've done both. I figure a shed style roof anchored securely to the house and sheathed with plywood isn't going to rack anyway.
*I agree with Ryan. If you're going to use a PT memeber all the way to the roof and cover it (or leave it bare), it doesn't matter. However, we frequenty build the "deck", as you call it, and then use a much nicer post to suppor the roof. I don't see a problem with either method; let the contractor who you select pick the best method that they are comforatable with.
