Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Everyone,
I need your help bad. I installed a 25 year asphalt dimensional roof 2 years ago on a 9:12 pitch gable roof. No valleys or anything except chimney on side of house with copper flashing in good shape and two pipes on South side with new flanges. The old roof was asphalt over cedar. New sheathing, ice-dam prevention and 15# felt.
PROBLEM: On the North side of the roof only, there is a lot of moisture/saturation that drips on attic floor near lowest part and moisture with water beads on nails from shingles. You stick your hand on the plywood and you come down wet.???? I can’t figure it out.. On the North side it’s a clean roof. The shingles are overlapped properly, there are no seams over seams. There are no nail heads exposed. The roof did seal as far as I can tell. I’m baffled. Why only on the North side? Where is the water coming from? The caps are fine? Bone dry on South side. There is no soffit on house and no ridge vent. Could it be a moisture problem on North side only? A bathroom vent to near the side gable-end vent has been there for years. Would a ridge vent help? Please help.
AS 1 month after roof, new siding went on house by Sears.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

if your roof is wet.. and it ain't raining... you've got an interior moisture problem..
you put new sheathing on ?
was the old sheathing skip-sheathed? (you said asphalt OVER cedar).. if so, you really changed the dynamics of your attic...
a wet roof sheathing is a big moisture symptom....stop the moisture at it's source... and vent the attic...
b but hey, whadda i no ?
*I agree with Mike....Ain't no doubt about it. That moisture is coming from the inside not the outside. Find source and stop it. Could be wire or pipe holes etc. near the problem area letting moist air right up into the attic.
*I don't know where you are but if you're in a cold climate now, it's probably condensation from inside air. Warm moist air rises to the attic and condenses on the cold roof sheathing. Doesn't happen on the South side because that's were the sun shines and keeps the sheathing too warm. One common problem: Check for bath vents that vent into the attic instead of outside. But most likely the solution will be to vent the attic.
