Later the summer I will be building my 20 I 24′ pole building type shop in place of a 12 X 18′ stick frame garage. I’ve had 2 different contractors tell me that they can pour a 2″ cap over the top of the existing slab, including the rest of the area to complete the 20 X 24’Islab. The original slab has some cracks but the transference to the new slab would be prevented by placing a thin styrene foam sheet in between these two. Is this a viable option to the cost and hassle of removing the old slab including the foundation? Any finishers out there with comments? Thanks. Greg…

Hi Greg,
You don't have the advice of 2 contractors, you have the advise of 2 wingnuts.
Do it right and do it once.
Take out the old and put in a new slab.

*yeh.. Gabe is right.. yur gonna fight that old slab every step of the way...take it out.. hell, break it up and bury it if u want.. just don't bury it where ur gonnal dig your poles..we always put our gravel base in place before we dig the poles... the slab is gonna be a PITA.. and also force u into compromises u don't needif u leave it ,, it will form a hard section so your new slab will NOT get uniform bearing..

That was what I was worried about. Doing something that would compromise my floor for the future. Thanks guys. Appreciate the info. Greg...
