Since most people that don’t even really know me within 20 miles do know me because of my tipi so I thought this may work for my new signs and biz cards…T-shirts etc etc.
Whatcha think?

Andy,
That's beautiful!! VERY original!
One critisism though if I may.........I know what you renovate, and the word itself implies homes to me, but do other people know that?
BTW, I've been meaning to thank you for the fine compliments you paid me a while back on the Birthday Boy? Thread. That was very kind of you and much needed. I have thought of you at least once a day since then, and that's when I'm not on Breaktime!
I'm glad you are pleased with the roof. I'm sure it looks great!.

The reason I love you all is because youre all honest and sincere.
Dont agree with a lot of you all but I do respect your feelings even though I question em'.
thats allowed, right?
I appologize to anyone I've ever hurt cause.....well.....bad day at black rock I reckon.
Funny enough.....I even wrote !!!!Larry!!!! several Emails trying to come to grips with him to obviously no avail back when......but hey....I really did try.

so, exactly what are you trying to tell your potential clientele? you work so friggin slow that they better get used to living in temporary housing, cuz their home is gonna be completely uninhabitable for months on end? when you're done, they'll wish they lived in a tipi? Speaking as one who ran a professional graphics studio in NYC for 15 years, I compliment you on that. It's very very good work. It will 'upmarket' you unless I completely miss my guess.
Just out of curiosity, did you mock that up yourself, or hire a graphic designer or ad agency to do it for you? It looks like the work of a pro to me; if you did it yourself, you've got a second career waiting for you when you get tired of sawdust and roofing in the rain....

PS--I wanna T-shirt for all the nice compliments I just paid ya....

The tipi pic was my idea due to the fact that people love and hate me cause in this hood its way out of the box.
The tag line was because of the house I'm doing here and the name and phone # well.duh.
Katrina helped put it together with me.
The guys at the sign company were totally inept in design IMO other than knowing how to make signs and put it all together.
really nice guys and were totally responsive.
Signs were a little pricey I think at $135+tax each on 1/2" MDO.
None the less they were real prompt and accomodating so thats worth a lot to me.
PS. Katrina went to Parsons School of Art and Design in Manhatten not that did her any good.lol...she's now in real estate but you should see what she only did back when.
Be well and thanks bro

Actually, $135 per sign doesn't seem that expensive to me unless you were having a large quantity produced. How big are they?
As to Katrina not having learned anything at Parsons, I'd say you're being too hard on the old alma mater. At my studio, I used to have a regular parade of Parsons students coming through to show their student portfolios in the hopes of getting summer or free-lance work. Also Cooper Union (especially as I was just up the street from them, on Union Square). At that time (mid 70s), neither school impressed me as having given the kids a particularly good handle on practical commercial graphics--just a lot of 'high artsy' sh!t which was useless to me and my clients. Looks like things may have changed for the better--or maybe Katrina was just a rebel, LOL....
What's good about your sign are the following points:
1) Excellent warm graphic image
2) Your company name is essentially a two-word message--virtually unforgettable even by someone who's not paying attention
3) The tag line is short and has what we call a reflexive snap phrase, linking two related words ('past/future') in a meaningful sense. This makes it easy to remember.
4) Phone number nice and big and easy to find. If they don't find the phone number, they'll never find you.
All in all a very good job.
Now...about those T-shirts: I wear a medium, all cotton, please--no polyester....LOLOL
Dinosaur
'Y-a-tu de la justice dans ce maudit monde?
I didn't say Katrina didn't learn anything at Parsons...at least I hope I didnt.
What I meant was that she stopped being an illustrator because she didnt make the kind of money she wanted especially with all the work and critisim she took from art directors. As I remember...some of the biggest rags barely paid for such intricate work she did.
She was rather successful but really didnt make enough money so I reckon money and success as an illustrator doesn't go hand in hand.
She did covers for large well know Sunday newspapers as well as a weekly thing for the garden section.
Psychology Today, Penthouse, Newsday, etc etc etc....as wel as having many shows in NYC and getting rave reviews in the papers for them.
Thank you for the concise comments about the sign. I truley appreciate that especialy coming from you.
No problem on the T's when I get up to that...lets not forget your sons...and NONE for the X...she gets a T that says BIDCH-X...lol.
she even gets me angry cause I've been there....and oh, dont get me going...I have to see my X-bidch at my daughters wedding in Sept....don't ask.
I'll send you aprivate Email and tell you this horror story or just send me your phone number....grrrrrrr.
Be well bro

You are right; Money with a capital M seldom goes with being an illustrator, although a good one can do a good bit better than bare survival.
The real money in the graphics biz goes to the four or five hot-shots at any given time who design the annual reports for the top 20 or 30 Fortune 500 companies. In 1980, Ford Corporation's annual report paid (I won't name him) a good bit over $750,000 just as design fees--no production costs ....
I'm not complaining, though. I never got to that level, but just before I retired so I could run away to sea, uh, ski, uh, both... I did manage to make enough profit off one client in three months to pay for half my house in cash.
Now I just gotta figure out how to make sure A2BX doesn't get her hands on it in our 'community property' province....

'Y-a-tu de la justice dans ce maudit monde?
touche'. actually, i think it's a cool sign but it might make some wonder about the focus of your business. if you do all sorts of different work that could be a good thing, since showing a specific style could also lead folks to think that's your specialty. sometimes i think half the battle is graciously avoiding work we don't want. i get what you're trying to say but i'm already a little familiar with what you do from bt. a tipi is a very interesting, eye-catching image, just not sure what it will conjure up in the minds of potential clients, and maybe that's for the best- let them ask and start the conversation. good luck with it. (and btw, i'm now speaking and thinking as a potential client- not for you of course, because you're 800 miles away- the loml and i are having 'new home' discussions for the not too distant future and one of the major issues is acreage w/ custom house vs. renovated/ing old house.)
m
Thanks mitch
And yeh, DW originally had said the same thing as you did but now that she saw the almost finished product she's back peddling and saying that she had said that because she thought it'd be too expensive to do...lol...Ms Backpeddler....
Anyway, as I said before, I'm trying to be original and show some creativity thats out of the box/different than the flock out there, yet classy and comforting.
For the most part....right now (monthssss)...it'll be in front of my house...the circa:1680 one that makes it obvious as to what I do and not to mention the "real" 20' tipi up on the hill I put up here.
I at first hated that they put three stop signs right in front of my house....one in each direction and one coming down the hill that is directly opposite my house....and most of those houses go for "millionssss" of dollars....so now I like the stop signs....lol....hence my signs right there!
Thanks again and be well
andyThe secret of Zen in two words is, "Not always so"!
http://CLIFFORDRENOVATIONS.COM
speaking of stop signs- about 15 yrs ago i was living in a house on a corner and the city decided to make it a four way stop so that it would slow traffic on the more 'through' street. man- i never realized how many friggin people have squeaky brakes! between that and the hotrodders, bad mufflers, etc, in the working class neighborhood it drove me nucking futs. you just don't notice that stuff nearly as much when they're rolling by instead of stopping and starting.
hopefully your neighbors have better maintained vehicles than mine did.
m
Andy,
I think your sign is great.
I don't know you personally or your business, but I think I could make a pretty good guess from all I've read here.
You are not a large contracting company. I would classify you as more of an artisan. Your sign would be bad for a company that needed to sell a few million a year to cover their overhead because it's off the beaten path. For you, your design tells people that I'm a little different, but if you want a guy to do your cedar roof and then tile their kitchen, you're the right man for the job. If they want the same guy that sells the job to be the one running it then you're the man.
I have one question. Have you thought about business cards yet? Are you going to use this design across the board?
Jon Blakemore
<<<I have one question. Have you thought about business cards yet? Are you going to use this design across the board?>>>
You can bet yer wampom I am.
Black cards withthe same stuff as on the signs...black T's and hats...all the same...
I thought it would be pretty cool to see the tipi lit up with the fire in it and the same color for my words and #'s..is that subtle enough?
And right.its about art and caring and being out of the box.
Appreciate your words. they mean a lot to me cause "you got it exactly right".
In my mind its not about selling what I'm not....its maybe even going overboard (yeh sure) as to who I am or wish I was or what I strive at being or sumpin' along dem lines.
After all....how many more years do I have in this incarnation...so why fug around at this point...lol.

Thanks....I hope to get the signs done this week then I'm off to a t-shirt company to see the costs and how long it'll take.
Remind me about a swap in a few weeks.
I think a t-shirt swap may be easier on the post office than the pencil swap but could get expensive for us....
Talk soon and thanks again
