THIS IS MY FIRST ATTEMPT SO GO EASY ON ME! I HAVE A CLIENT THAT WOULD LIKE TO SWITCH OUT HIS PINE TREADS ( WHICH ARE DADO INTO THE STRINGERS WITH RAILS OVER TOP ) TO AN OAK TREAD. STAIRS ARE 3′-0″ WIDE SO SPAN IS NOT A BIG ISSUE . MY THOUGHT IS TO CUTOUT TREAD, FILL DADO, ADD BLOCKS ON THE SIDE FOR TREAD SUPPORT BLOCK THE BACK FOR RISER SUPPORT.
THE IDEA IS TO NOT RIPE OUT THE STRIGERS AND RAILING
HAS ANYONE DONE ANY THING LIKE THIS? IF SO HOW BAD WAS IT?

Welcome to BT, but please turn off your caps lock - we are sensitive to being SHOUTED at...
OK, Let's be gentle here - first lesson is that you have a key on your keyboard just left of the "A"
it is called the caps lock key and it makes all your letters capitalized.
TURN THE DAMN THING OFF! because all caps is considered shouting and rude in forums, OK?
On the Stairs - I would not rely on sid eblocks, but would cut new stringers - three of them, to rebuild. Why is he looking to changethem out? Just wants a new species of wood or are they worn out? With the raailing mounted over the stirs too, this is going to be a total rebuild anyways. Hope he has plenty of dinero

Yeh, that shouting has to go...
The treads and risers are held in place with wedges on the under side. Risers nailed to the back of the treads. You have to get at the wedges and pull the nails out of the back of the risers. Also, depending on the style of the maker, they may be nailed through the stringers as well. If plaster or drywall is underneath, there will be a nailer for it.
DO NOT FILL DADO. use the dado to put it back like it was with the new treads or talk the homeowner out of it all together.
Best to you and yours, Chris.
Some say I know too much? Can you ever?
I'd agree that re-using the dadoes would be the best approach, if possible.
How do the rails tie in to the rest of the stairs? Will the ballusters need to be removed in order to get the treads out?
A picture would probably be worth a thousand words here.
