When i was working for a remodeling company in houston 12 years ago, my foreman would put 1x4s around the window after they were installed. He did it for the bricklayer and I was never sure why. It wasnt trim work because he used scraps and was not particualr about the joints. Yesterday I put a window through a brick wall,. I did not cut out the brick carefully because a brick layer is coming next week to do the addition, I just busted out where i needed the window. He can tooth it in later. But I was wondering if he needs the 1x4s and got to wondering ,….why. On the addition side, the guy that origianlly did the addtion used 2x6s (on the flat) and then intalled the windows on top of the 2x6s, hence bumping out the window 1.5 inches.
can some one clarify all this for me

windows/brick veneer
I'm not there, can't see it, so really can't answer your question. However, it is not uncommon to install 1x4's BEFORE installing the window. Brick venner construction requires a min. 1" air space between the brick and the sheathing. The 1x4's move the window out so that the brick can be layed to the window .
I have no idea why 1x4's would be installed after or what the 2x6's or for. Maybe someone smarter than both of us will explain.
