Doing the finish on a setof stairs….plans changed from wall mounted handrail at the top of the stairs, to a newel post. Upper floor has laminate flooring (floating) . Just hit me, I’ve never had that situation before, and can’t recall seeing it…..so, what’s the best practice here? Thoughts haven’t progressed beyond chopping through it to the subfloor, and putting a moulding around the base of the newel, but if there is a better way, I’m all for it.
Jobsite is two hours away, and I’m heading back up Friday morning, so I need to have a plan before then. Thanks for any suggestions.

There really is no other way, is there? Dumb question. Thanks.cabinetmaker/college woodworking instructor. Cape Breton, N.S
What I'd do...........
Your newell post is either 3" square or 3/ 1/2" square, right? I'd cut a shoulder around the bottom of the post 1/4" deep equal to the depth of the flooring, probably 5/16" or 3/8". If your newell is 3" square, you would chop a 2/ 1/2" square recess in the flooring. If the newell is 3/ 1/2" square you would chop a 3' square recess in the flooring. That way the newell would set right down on the flooring and the 1/4" shoulder would cover up any irregularity of the chopped recess and no moulding would be required.
U typed out my thots.
two choices ... cover it ... or hide it.
