Help – framing is done, metal standing seam roof being delivered in 3 weeks, does anyone have any experiences with non-clogging rain gutters?
We have a 3 story house with no safe/easy access to the roof and we need rain gutters on that do not need cleaning. We want gutters that collect the water (rather than disperse it as it falls) because we are on a slope and need to be concerned about errosion. I have seen them in home shows and now that I need them, I can not find any information .
Thanks, Karen

We gotta get a FAQ going.............
Karen, try the "search" feature. This subject gets discussed at least once a week around here.
*You'll also find in a search those of us who don't use gutters. Proper drainage away from house and some way to deal with splash back are some of the problems you will have to address. Still, this can be dealt with. Our home is on a hill side. Hip roof w/ 2 ft ohang. Downhill side is way up there. Running up each side of the house would be a pain to set up a ladder. Decided to deal with the water on the ground. Am satisfied after 10 years that gutters aren't a necessity. With a hip, entry can get pretty wet. Should have porch roofed over them. But then again, we don't live in the rain forest.Erosion is something to consider I guess, but we capture the water with our found. drainage and deal with it much as you would the water coming out of the downspout. Living in the woods, we go to french drain with slower dispersment. So expand your search to more than just what kind of gutter or screen. Some of us believe you don't necessarily need it in the first place. Best of luck.
*Water falling that far, plus being blown by the wind on the way down, is going to get all over the place and erode the earth. I endorse the no-gutter school, but 3 stories?Yep, gutters are the "build a better mousetrap" story of this board. Search away. (P.S. Maybe get one of the guaranteed, very expensive gutters -- like $20/ft installed, and not even copper -- at least THEY will have to figure out the roof access problem.)
*I recently discovered this place: guttersdirect.com. The shields with the bull nose edges look like they might work, though, along with others here, I wish we could just do way with gutters.......
*Minor wisdom: A shield is better than no shield, EXCEPT for those blasted mesh screens that back water into the house. Big debris-gulping gutters are good. Sharp bends anywhere are bad -- one stick and it's all over. Finally, do check your gutters periodically....Hey Jim, I'm lazy, post links like this so they light up (but thank you): http://www.guttersdirect.com Unlike the site, I recommend 10' lengths from the non-DIY lumberyard. The high-end solutions are franchise installed, look in the YP for Gutterhelmet and Guttertopper (a fried is a salesperson for the latter). Both are hideously expensive, $2-3k for an average house, but guaranteed for life, transferable.
