Anyone seen this before.
On certain sides of two houses (15 miles apart) I have small black dots protruding out of paint surface. The dots are absolutely not mildew, they feel almost tar like, they have not changed in appearence or size in years. They do not power wash off, they do not come off with bleach, paint thinner may soften slightly, you can scrape them off (almost completely) with a knife. If you sand them the paint around comes off first.
We are guessing a sap or organic material of some kind from nearby trees.
any ideas??

No one with a guess even???
Resin from in the wood hardenning like amber
Excellence is its own reward!
I don't think so, because it is also on one side of the garage (on one house) that has aluminum siding...no resin there.
I am thinking some kind of airborne accumulation of sap or pollen from a tree...just don't know
Are you in an industrialized area?
I have seen something like you descibe form industrial polution.
Fairfield county CT. Not really industrialized, nyc commuter areas.
I think this is one of those cases where an attached pic would come in handy.

Do you have any organic mulch near the houses? If so you might check out "artillery fungus" and mulches.

This sounds like the problem....how do we remove it????
Can you paint over it???
Bill
You mean besides scraping and power sanding. :) The problem is that once they have been there for more than a coupla weeks they can be tough to remove.
Try this link from the Delco board. I have not tried this, so can't tell you how well it will work.

Thanks Barry, you have been incredibly informative. Not that I got any answers that I liked, just what sounds and looks an awful lot like the truth.
