Good news, Breaktimers: I wasn’t kidding when I put a call out for peer-mods a few threads ago. We’re always thinking about ways we can make the forum better and since moderation is something that can always be improved, we figured it’s time to try out a peer-mod system here. It’s a win-win for all.<!—-><!—-> <!—->
<!—-> <!—->
I knew better than to even try to sweet-talk Piffin into becoming a peer-mod, but with <!—-> <!—->Luka <!—->’s help, I was able to corral a handful of other BT-favorites who are willing to pitch in. Your new peer-mods (PMs) are: <!—-> <!—->
<!—-> <!—->
<!—->Luka<!—-><!—-><!—->
RichBeckman<!—-><!—->
Shep<!—-><!—->
GregGibson<!—-><!—->
Gunner<!—-><!—->
Mike_Maines<!—-><!—->
<!—-> <!—->
These guys were asked based on their ability to be impartial, available, and committed to working for the good of the community. They also have decent senses of humor, a requirement for the job. We asked <!—->Luka <!—-> to take on the role of head peer-mod based on his long history as a member of this community and his compulsion toward fairness. Additionally, it appears he never sleeps. Not a requirement for the job, but it helps during an election year.<!—-><!—->
<!—-> <!—->
The group will be guided by two things: our TOS and common sense. They’re also community advocates and a positive force on the forum, here to help you whenever they can.
<!—-> <!—->
This isn’t a shake-up, the change will be a seamless one. In practical terms, they are going to do a lot of what they do already: contribute to the forum (business as usual) and step in when a thread starts going downhill. We know you’d rather hear from them than from us!

aspirin thins the blood and headaches have a lot to do with vasoconstriction/dilation, so I can imagine it happeneing, but o definite ideas on how the bio-chemistry works
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
Piffin,
I haven't read the whole thread but I thought I would jump in here at the comment about migraine. Don't mean to hijack.
Although the vessels are dilated during a migraine it's not the dilation that causes the headache. Rather, the same thing that causes the blood vessels to dilate causes the headache. That is, it's a result rather than the cause. At least that's one of the current theories on migraine.Aspirin doesn't "thin" the blood. It is an agent that inhibits platelets which are cells in the circulation that initiate clotting. The mechanism by which aspirin helps headaches is in aspirin's antiinflammatory properties. Aspirin doesn't make the blood less viscous in it's flowing properties.Sorry to be such a pedantic sob. Now back to your regular programming.
Piffin's right on the vaso-dilation part. Aspirin is definitely NOT the cure you're looking for.A lot of migraine sufferers (my BIL for one) find that a very strong cup of coffee helps cut the episode length...Sorry to hear about it - hope it's isolated.-t

But from what I heard about them, I made a guess as to what it may have been. It seems to have passed, but I feel like I have a "shadow" or "ghost" feeling ..hard to describe. I have NEVER had a headache come on so fast and so strong before.
Diet hasn't changed, stress is actually lower than it has been for a while, and I was at my doc not 3 weeks ago..BP was 120/80..perfect he said.

Dude...don't want to put the fear of God in you but that sudden headache might be a warning sign in the form of a headache. It wouldn't kill you to get your butt on down to the doctor and get it checked out...can you say the word Aneurysm? (Web MD)What are the symptoms?Most brain aneurysms cause no symptoms and may only be discovered during tests for another, usually unrelated, condition. In other cases, an unruptured aneurysm will cause problems by pressing on areas within the brain. When this happens, the person may suffer from severe headaches, blurred vision, changes in speech, and neck pain, depending on the areas of the brain that are affected and the severity of the aneurysm. If you have any of the following symptoms or notice them in someone you know, see a health professional immediately.
I used to get them for a few years after I stopped boxing. I also used to get them when I smoked. So bad that all I could do is lay on the bed with my face in a pillow and not move for hours. They would still hurt but any movement or noise would seem like it was going to kill me.
After I stopped smoking and when I had a couple more wisdom teeth pulled I stopped getting the real bad ones. I still get them from time to time like when the weather does likes it doing now. But I can function most of the time. If I go to the farm and the weather is right I'm pretty much ruined for a couple of days.

Woodway is right in post 32. A new "worst headache of your life" warrants an exam. Some aneurysms have a sentinel leak and then may be followed by a much worse rupture. The fact it went away doesn't mean your in the clear. If you've had similar headaches for years, and this one was like all the others than you can stay home and take your meds.I know I'm way behind on these posts but I was oot and if this is reduntant then I apologize.
Thanks anyway, I seem OK ( I think) ...I'll compare to the next pressure front that rolls in..some really do whack me.
We had a Tornado near by a month or two back, man, I felt that in my sinuses something fierce, and I did recently get over ( finally) a LONG term sinus infection, like a year long.
Dentist insisted it was sinus not a chipped bone from an extraction, xrays showed bone chip...M.D. gave a round of anti's and second go round, we nailed it. I think it may be recurring, and that was it letting me know.

Keep this in mind. A critical review of "sinus" disease finds that sinus headache is mostly a bogus diagnosis. I'm not saying the pain isn't real, but recurrent facial pain is usually migraine, not sinus. Unless you have fever and nasty green schmooey coming out of your nose then facial pain headache is not sinus. BTW, schmooey is liquid schmutz.
Hmmmm. I'm familiar with the slang (g). I did have a low grade fever, and the snot, but as I said that has passed a few months ago. I AM just now getting the ear pops and drainage ( post nasal drip) so I may be looking at another run at it.
Thanks. My next Dr. appt. is end of next mo. I'm on some meds for a loopy back spasm/disc issue. He's been keeping me on the anti inflams and when it gets horrrendous a really wild muscle relaxer that must be like heroin, it sends me off my rocker.
Never know if there is a med cross action going on either. He got me on Cymbalta ( an antidepessant) for fibromyalgia type symptoms, and to keep me from killing someone when the back pain kicks up, I get REAL irritable, too easy when I'm hurting.
I was supposd to get the back/disc/rib fixed this winter, but funds weren't there, I don' have ins. and zero credit, as I don't want any credit.
So I hang in there, and keep the fingers crossed.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Funny you should say that the muscle relaxer is like heroin. Soma [the brand name], a muscle relaxer, is like heroin in that addicts in withdrawal can use it to assauage the craving. Truth is though that muscle relaxers do not relax muscles. Think like this...if the pill relaxes your muscles enough in your back to relieve the pain then your quadraceps would be like cooked spagheti and you would fall down. They seem to help but no one can prove they actually relax muscles. The real mechanism of action is unknown.Be careful of Soma if that is what you are using.
Cymbalta is what I've been on for my post lyme fibro. Doing good - saves bottles of other pain meds

I would guess something other than migraine.
All the migraines I've had over the last 30+ years were preceded by a fairly lengthy process of tunnel vision "aura", followed by numbness in my hands, inability to communicate or think of words, then finally the headache. When I first started getting them as a teenager, they were pretty horrific headaches. Fortunately, as I got older they became less frequent (I've gone as much as 4 years between) and less severe.
The sudden, drop-to-your knees type of headache I believe is a significantly different issue.
Now, if the new moderators can solve these kinds of headaches, they get my vote.

Look up the word peer, in the dictionary.Peer mods are intended to be part of the community. Not above the community.Peer mods weren't chosen because they were perfect.As peer mods, we do not think ourselves perfect. You shouldn't expect us to be, either.Not in the future, and certainly not in the past.Gunner has shown a history of being more concerned about the community, than about being 'liked'.As a long time member of this community... With all the good and all the bad that that implies... I am positive that Gunner understands you, and understands the community, much better than someone who comes here and posts just to get a rise out of people, or to try to attain a 'higher position' in the group, etc...Among other good reasons, Gunner was also chosen because he is not afraid to speak up. And because he is not afraid to admit being wrong, and apologise...I'm not worried, I'm curious...You are always welcome at Quittintime

It is good that you are willing to try things. My biggest fear, based on observations at other sites, was that there will be a distinct layer of politicing going on, to the detriment of the overall forum. Essentially, you just injected a significant element of politics into the forum, outside of the tavern.
I don't know what is going on inside of the tavern that caused you to think you needed mods out here, but I haven't seen much out there that created a call for action. As such, I really wish you had limited their newly found status and powers to inside the forum.
I am also already disturbed seeing the icons attached to the posts of whomever. Whether they arefriends, frenemys or well respected or despised, it doesn't matter to me. It is just disturbing. If I had answered the call (I didn't and wouldn't), and was interested (I'm not), and qualified (I'm not), I would have refused the title and job if I knew you were going to attach a visible icon to every one of my posts. That would be a deal killer to me even if I was very enthusiastic about helping yall out with the modding. The reason is basic: this forum was at it's greatest when the peers policed it and they didn't need star icons on their tags. It also worked much better when the peers didn't send posts tattling about others. This forum has become like a bunch of gradeschoolers in many ways instead of being a forum that resembled a worksite with real men (and women) that built fine houses.
Summed up. I applaud you for trying new things and I sincerly hope your attempts bear good fruit. I'm skeptical, though as you probably can tell from my post already.
I don't fully understand why we need any more moderation. Obviously, you know more than I about that. I've never been a big fan of moderators in general. Most (99.99%) mods, who also participate in the forums, overextend and abuse their powers. Most times, they don't think they are abusing their powers and some of them actually believe they are being fair but they can't possibly see themselves objectively, and they simply aren't totally unbiased. Human nature prevents that. With that said, I can say that I've felt that Taunton has been a superior forum because the mods, for the most part, stayed out of the discussions, therefore, to me, they appeared fair. Maybe they weren't being fair and unbalanced, but I couldn't distinguish that they weren't. That made the mod thing bearable for me, when Taunton started with their heavy hand. Of course, I still am not happy about getting booted without cause, but I attribute that to a mistake, rather than an intentional act. I might be naive though.
Anyways, its your forum and you can do what you want. Hopefully, you haven't taken it down another notch with these actions.
Congratulations!

I do like the idea of containing their powers to the tavern. Very few problems elsewhere.
Then our powers won't be used elsewhere. It's not brain surgery. Nobody intends to jump in if you disagree on any advice. I could care less. Just don't threaten to shank anyone over bad advice.

Too late. I already bought an old 74 Crown Victoria that was decommissioned by the hwy patrol.

Hey Jim,
I appreciate your well-thought out response. Let me see if I can’t help clarify a bit. I do want to try something new here, but not because there’s anything bad going on, quite the opposite. I see a lot of good going on here and I want it to continue. A while back, I posted a thread asking for civility across the board, even when Breaktimers vehemently disagree with one another. Many responses to that post were focused on moderation. There’s either too much or not enough. I got a lot of feedback and I’m trying to put the best of it to work. The peer-mods are meant to be a resource for the community. So sure, if posts get out of hand in the tavern, someone will pipe up and see if he can’t help turn it around, but as members of the community, the guys are contributing to every/all folders on the forum—as they’ve done for years. It’s not about policing, it’s about highlighting the resources. Try not to get distracted by icons. I don’t know if the peer-mod system will work here; that’s up to the community. I do know it works for Knots, http://www.FineWoodworking.com’s community, so I’m optimistic.<Anyways, it’s your forum and you can do what you want.> I have another way of looking at it: This forum belongs to the community. That’s what makes it so good. Now, it’s simply moderated with help from the community as well. For sure, Taunton has standards and expectations we all need to meet (TOS), but by and large, Breaktime is yours. Again, I want to thank you for your post, your observations, and for giving this a chance. -Robyn
dang but this woman's good.
Rich Beckman as a moderator? Apparently you've never met Mr. Beckman. Nothing but trouble, says I.
And for everyone else that's nervous about your peers being moderators, no need to worry. Remember, "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others."
I think the idea of moderators is fine. I became frustrated with the stupidity of the Tavern years ago and never entered after it became private. So I haven't seem much of the idiotic acts that have gone on behind closed doors, but occasionally see the fallout when someone disappears off the main boards for a spell.
It might be easier on the eye if the color of the moderator's star was toned down a bit. I find myself reaching for my sunglasses whenever that retina-burning icon rears it's supernova eye-cauterizing head.
Hey, in this overindulging age of "eco-" everything, why not make it a lovely shade of soft green? You might even be able to get it LEEDS certified.
We're hoping for a more subdued, blue "M" or "PM".Of course, we are apparently waiting on Mzinga to make the change. And you know how that goes. Hurry up and wait...I'm not worried, I'm curious...You are always welcome at Quittintime
You should get an animated gif that shows exploding fireworks whenever I open one of your posts.
