Hello: New to this site from cookstalk- I will be doing a paint job for my son this weekend and he thoughtfully bought 15 gallons of Kilz primer from Home Depot. Is it the same quality as other primer or am I destined to be a victim of the lowest bidder syndrome? I suggested he buy Benj Moore but this stuff was too cheap to pass up. Thanks Rich WQill be priming 1200 ‘ addition mostly sheetrock.

Kilz started out, many years ago, with one product...a primer which blocked stains from coming through new paint. Now they're marketing many more products. All I know about them is that their stain blocking primer worked well.
Here's their FAQ page. Maybe this will help decide if what you have will work on your application: http://www.kilz.com/pages/default.aspx?NavID=61
Other companies, like Behr...also available at HD...make a primer which is specifically for new sheet rock. It has an adhesive quality when dry which pulls the paint out of the roller, allowing a single top coat in most cases.
The last thing I want to do when rolling paint, not my favorite job, is to go back for a third trip over the same surface.
although not one of my favorites,Kilz will suffice ,,,make sure it's is mixed, strred, shaken or boxed,, ( poured from one 5 gal bucket to another several times )
good luck !
I've had excellent results from Kilz stain blocker, their interior and exterior primers, and their mildew-resistant paint. Much of it was bought from big boxes, but the price at Ace hardware isn't enough higher to make me think that they're making a special cut-rate paint for HD.
I've had great results using the Kilz mildew-resistant primer. I've gone through quite a bit of it and totally satisfied with it.Covers nice! After one coat over new drywall it almost looked like a finish coat.

Is the odor of Kilz an issue when painting a full room?
Not with Latex it isn't.

The original Kilz (still available) has an alcohol base with a horrible odor problem. You absolutely have to use it with good ventilation. The latex stuff is not much different than latex paint."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Original Kilz is oil based. It is BIN that is shellac (alcholo solvent). The problem with discussion like this is that Kilz is both a brandname and a specific product.Unless one gives the full product name everyone is talking about a different product.Kilz Orginal
Kilz Orderless
Kilz Exterior
Kilz General Purpose
Kilz/2 Latex
Kilz Premium

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
You're right, it is the shellac Bins that stinks so bad. But i have never seen this product: Ki;z Orginal low VOC. "Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

fast one it is important to set you straight
Bin shellac base is unpleasant
KILZ original is the one when I get a whiff my vision blurrs & I see yellowish brown tinged brain cells floating in the air never to harmonize again
always amazed me how appropriate the name of the company is - perhaps their legal department named it
Rich,
Come to think of it, doesn't HD have a policy of no returns on paint? Kinda looks like you'll be primin' with whatcha got...
>> Come to think of it, doesn't HD have a policy of no returns on paint?I don't know any place that will take back custom tinted colors but I've returned unopened, untinted paint at HD before.
