I’m interested in any feedback regarding a roofing panel made by ONDURA. It’s an asphalt impregnated material that according to the manufacturer will last up to 40 years (or more). I had something similar removed from a barn roof 2 years ago because in high winds, large pieces of it were being torn off. It seemed to have dried out from constant exposure to sun and become very brittle. I don’t know exactly how long it had been on the roof but probably between 20-25 years. I was told it was originally manufactured by CERTAINTEED. Any comments are greatly appreciated. A friend is planning to use it on a pavillion and I told him my concerns and I’d try and get some opinions in this forum. Thanks.

This comes up about once a year. Always gets a resounding boo.
Mine was called Onduline at the time. By far the worst roofing I've ever bought.
PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
Another big negative from me. The panels are not very stiff, so they tend to bend and move a fair amount. I had problems with leaking around nail holes. When I tore the shed down this summer after about 4 years they were essentially crumbling in my hands as I took them down.
They also took almost a year to stop smelling like fresh asphalt.
A local lumber yard had some on display in the parking lot. After a few years it showed considerable weathering and was soft to the touch. It was clearly not a material with much longevity.
It's unconventional and quirky, but it's not a bad product if you understand it. They use it all over Northern Europe.
1) You have to keep it painted (like wood siding) otherwise it breaks down. Depending on your climate and exposure every 4--6 years. Any high quality acrylic-latex paint will do.
2) Use the screws they make -not the nails- for a longer lasting fit.
3) For longer life some custom metal flashing protects edges.
I've had it on a house in coastal N. California for 20 years no major issues.
