How long can you wait before opening up that new toy, er, tool, and trying it out on something.
Longest I’ve gone is a couple maybe three days. Almost always I get it to where I’m going, it’s the first thing out of the truck, skim the instructions (my one discipline — still have all five on all four extremities), set it up and I’m on some piece of scrap to see what it can do.

Small tools get opened in the truck and bigger tools get opened when I get to the garage. Officially used soon after.
I generally retire to the basement as soon as I get something home and open it up.
Trying it out involves finding a scrap piece of wood or something similar as soon as possible. (There are a couple of holes in my basement wall where I just HAD to try out that rotary hammer)
Reading the instructions generally takes a year or more, if ever.

What is it about that rotary hammer? I got one a couple months ago and when explaining what it does and how well it works to my better half, I told her I could take down the whole house with it in a couple hours if I wanted to (we live in a brick house). Her eyes got really wide for a second as she contemplated if I might actually do that.

I don't know, but I sure like that thing. I even bought it from a guy here on BT.
My previous attempts at drilling concrete were with masonry bits chucked in a standard drill. I had no idea concrete could be drilled so easily.
So like I said - I really like the thing.
I'm not a god... I've just been misquoted.
Shortest is probably in the checkout line or before the UPS Truck dust settles in the driveway. Longest is going on a little over three years. Just had to have a thickness planer, ordered a DW733 from Amazon Tool Crib. Had access to a pile of mahogany free and was going to make some things. Still have not plugged it in. Did take it out of box though.
Shortest time....in the checkout isle.
Longest time......6 mos and counting on a table saw for my shop....no elec yet.
my drywall hoist is on the fedex truck delivering to the office as we speak. i'm hoping i can wait until i get home, rather than spreading it all over the parking lot. yep, i do love my toys. besides, my son moved away and for some reason, my 20 year old college student daughter doesnt find hanging drywall fun like she did when she was 10. i NEED the hoist.
i'm not suggesting divorce just so you can get new tools, but it sure is nice to be able to buy something and bring it home without having to answer "tell me again why you need that?" i think i am loading up the shop with everything i always "needed" in anticipation of the 2nd/last dw.
I've got a brand new DeWalt Jigsaw that I've no plans to open. It was a "rebate" for purchase of a table saw. Already have a Bosch that's working fine. If the Bosch ever goes bust, then DeWalt will get opened up.
Would have rather $ off vs. a saw that I might never use.
Put it on eBay. People pay more than new prices sometimes. Dewalt is popular tools on ebay.
