Soon to start siding my addition (porch roof is done, and it doesn’t leak!).
Two questions: How does one work the starting strip for the sidewalls of a dormer on a 12in12 roof? Just a small triangle at the bottom?
Also, my design has a wide trim board at the bottom of each wall (can’t recall the appropriate term). Do I put Z-flashing above this trim, or just lap the siding over the board slightly?

You do want a flashing.
On the dormer, measre down from the frieze or soffit wheere the siding will end at top, so your start pieces ar right. Make tick marks on the cornerboard for bottom of each run. Place a 1/2" or 3/4" board on th eshingles so your siding will be even and always up off the roofing - you don't want it to wick water up and go bad .
Then after first one is in, you can use a level and pencil from the tick marks to line bottom of each succeeding course to the shim board. measure, curt, and install.

good approach to 'storyboard' the siding with the cornerboards. Hadn't yet thought about the 'how to line up' situation as yet.
Also like the idea of a 1-by flat on the roof to coordinate the bottoms of the clapboards. I expect I'll be using that one a lot. Manufacturer wants 1"-2" exposure above the shingles. I expect I'll rip down a 2x4.

TJ, I'd recommend not using the 2x, the gap above the shingles will really stand out
not unless you have some thick shingles or shakes. The 1x will look a whole lot
