Kostello,
Sorry about the injury. I have never done that one. I pulled a ligament in that area once and it took a couple of weeks. I was about your age then. Hope you heal quickly. DanT
3 months to heal.... 12 to 18 months to recover...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming....
WOW!!! What a Ride!
What a bummer.
Have no idea how long it takes to get back the use of your wing after something like that. Heard that without that little bone your shoulder sags and lifting your arm is impossible. Be a while before you can even whup your way out of a paper bag. Enjoy the light duty while you can.
From what I can see of your X-ray, you have a shoulder separation, not a fractured clavicle. It's a separation of the AC (acromioclavicular) and the CC (coracoclavicular) "joints". They are not real joints, but we'll call them that.
They used to do surgery for 3rd degree separations but now mostly immobilization and rehab. It comes from landing on your shoulder and is one of the reasons football players wear shoulder pads. A first degree is a clinical diagnosis where the mechanism and the pain are present but without detectable setoff at the AC joint.
A 3rd degree is a complete separation which is what you appear to have, and the 2nd degree is between those. We used to X-ray both shoulders; once without weights and once with the patient holding a weight to make the separation more pronounced. It hurts and in my opinion is not necessary.
A shoulder immobilizer is used rather than a figure of eight clavicle strap. Your problem is that you may not be able to wear a strapless gown to the prom this year.
Sure does look like a A/C separation. But that is academic the point here is it hurts and you will be restricted in your activity for awhile. While the orthopedists don't operate on these much anymore keeping the end of the bone down in a near normal position for 3-6 weeks will be the key to a good recovery. Make sure you get the Dr. to send you too Physical Therapy. You will need to get normal range of motion and strength back before you take on any major activity. You are not left handed by chance?
You are not left handed by chance?
well as you mention it i am!!!!!!
You will at least be able to eat and do other mundane tasks without making to much of a mess. Good luck with it all.
thanks for the info i've got to go to the fracture clinic today to get registered and i'm sure that they will have a few things to say.
as a side topic:
at more or less thesame time yesterday my brother fell off his motorbike and he broke his left collar bone in more or less the same place.
so i suggested we strap oursleves together and become conjoined temporarily
It does look like an AC joint separation. I wiped the side of a mountain with my face during a mountain bike accident a couple years ago and also had an AC separation in the process. I made the mistake of ignoring the pain and continuing with weightlifting and other stupid things. After six months of this I finally stopped ALL activity for a total period of six weeks. Then I used gradual light-weight recovery exercises to rebuild strength. I never did get the recommended cortizone shot. After a year of slow recovery, I can do most things I used to do without pain. I do still have a bone sticking further out on one side of my chest though!

Good luck with the recovery, I wrestled with one one time, hurt like sh!t.
Nothing like being young and stupid though!

Sorry to hear about the injury. It helps to start out with some light weightlifting, say perhaps some 12 ounce curls. Repeat often. Most importantly, do not wait until the injury heals to commence this. For now, use the other arm. Switch to the arm that has to be rehabbed only after the doctor gives his okay.
Good luck.
Sorry bro
My diagnosis is, "I believe its a warning".
BE WELL

I crashed my mountain bike and broke my right collarbone a couple of years ago. It was a particularly horrible accident for spectators--I was racing my buddy and flew off of a wet footbridge and took a header in a creek filled with boulders. The doctors did nothing but give me a sling to immobilize my arm and shoulder, and a bottle of Vicodin. Since I'm right handed I quickly figured out that I could remove my wrist from the sling and use it to shift gears, move the mouse, eat, etc. Two weeks later I went for my first ride, a very careful ride on flat ground. Another two weeks later I was riding on dirt. The xray doc said it looked well joined so after a total of 6 weeks I was back to my usual stuff. The pain was mainly from how my wife beat the sh!t out of me when I got home with a busted bone.
I can't read the pictures, said "unavailable now, try later".
I broke both, the collar bone, when a horse pawed me and a shoulder when a race horse and I hit a tree going way too fast (equipment failure, bit broke). The horse broke his shoulder also and had to be destroyed. Sad.
The collarbone took a few weeks, didn't hurt any if moving slow and it left a little bump when healed. No trouble at all.
The shoulder took six moths to heal well and it was two years before it didn't hurt any at all, is 100% fine now. It hurt A LOT, had to be kept in a sling and I slept in a chair for a while.
I hope yours will be ok soon.
i saw the consultant yesterday pm and he said that the best thing i can do is to wear a sling for a fortnight and after that get back to normal.
he also said that i should take my arm out of the sling and move it around regularly.
it been quite surprising how much i have been able to move it already.
so i've got myself a 'righthand man' for a couple of weeks to give me a hand.
my brother on the other hand will have a bit more of a recovery but he is fortunate as he can work from home.
Sounds like good news.
Any new thinkin' come out of the situation?

"""Any new thinkin' come out of the situation?"""
i must admit to wondering what i was going to do about work while i was sat on the ground waiting to go to hospital.
as i'm more or less a one man band there's not really any scope for things like this.
so the thought about maybe claming down abit when doing "dangerous?" sports did cross my mind.
i don't do them very often but i love it.
i tend to get in the zone and keep pushing. i think part of this is because i don't do this stuff every day so i aim to get the most out of it as possible. considering all the crazy things i've done i've never got injured before. so i think i've done ok so far.
i think that it may well push further toweards getting full time help something i have been dithering over for the last 18 months. this i think i mainly because i am a control freak and find it hard to let go.
