I am getting ready to purchase new shutters for my home in a historic district. First, does anyone know the appropriate width of shutter to width of window ratio for an authentic look? Would each shutter simply be half the width of the window? Secondly, has anyone used the composite shutters? Being maintenance free is certainly a plus but I’m concerned about them looking “fake.” Any advice?

They should hinge shut and lock closed. My grandmother used to close hers everynight. First thing in the morning open them up and they'd click back into the sprung keepers at the wall. So, obviously they should be hung just above the exterior window sill so they can swing closed.
A window shutter is a stable window covering installed for the security, privacy and to prevent outside elements from entering the house.
