oversized birch plywood

RedfordHenry | Posted in General Discussion on September 26, 2005 04:06am

I recently picked up 6 sheets of birch plywood (shop grade) at local yard (not a big box) for a small cabinet project.  After doing all my rough length cuts with the circular saw I discovered that each sheet was 48.5″ wide.  I have used a lot of birch over the years and have never seen it oversized.  Was this just an odd batch or something new?

I've seen it done with MDF. I like it.

It seems everything i get from my supplier is oversized. It stops folks from complaining when the corner is crushed or slightly out of square I guess.

I've always seen MDF, melamene/particle board but I havent seen ply oversized yet.

Its done so that you can trim the bad edges off.

I think most of the cabinet grade plywood I have bought over the years is oversized.  For many cabinet makers, the "factory edge" is not good enough.

Maybe ya need a new tape measure?  LOL

Most MDF is 49x97 to allow for kerfs when cutting I was told.

Birch veneer MDF would logically be same sized.

Birch PLYWOOD ought to be standard.

I did score some BAltic birch 2 yrs ago that was 49x97..go figgure..I never saw baltic in the 60x60 or 49x97 in a big box store. They usually just stock poplar/alder core with a REALLY REALLY thin veneer face..and loaded with voids, that telgraph right through the face veneer when hit with a wet finish..awful stuff.

Can you describe the core of what you bought?

Birch plywood core was 5 ply (plus the veneer layers).  Looks like poplar on the inside.  The overall thickness was a fat 3/4", maybe 1/32+ over.  Very nice veneer on both sides actually and I don't recall any voids at all.  I picked it from the "shop" grade stack, in retrospect, I wonder if they put a lift of "premium" grade in there by mistake.  One of them wierd things I guess.  Will be sure to always check in the future.

      Thanks for your feedback.

Have not seen that yet----but have gotten ply that is of varying thicknesses. I got a new computer and decided to knock out a new desk for it---a one sheet of ply kinda thing. Oak ply from HD---space on one side for the CPU and a shelf. Decided to do dados for the joinery----router and plywood bit----the undersized bit designed for ply.

    Uhuh---ply was over 3/4" thick!!!!

Did not find out until dryfitting-----just redid the dado's, but still was confizzled!!!

My local plywood/hardwood dealer stocks oversized plywood.  The big box and regular lumberyards stock standard size.
