Can anybody suggest a formula for determining the proper number of 40watt fluorescent fixtures for a dining hall of X square feet?

Can't suggest how many but will suggest splitting them up on a cpl. switches so you can adjust the amount later. I'd go to my lighting supplier who gives good advice without trying to sell you more lites. best of luck
*It depends on how much time you want to spend to get it right. There are more variables than square footage, like height of ceiling, height of fixtures, color of walls, type of fixture (different fluorescent fixtures direct light in different ways), who will use it (old-age home, schoolchildren, etc).I think Calvin's suggestion is good, as long as you can get someone knowledgeable at the supply house. When I'm faced with commercial lighting design I draw a sketch of the room(s) and fax it or take it with me to talk to them .Lee
*.... a good basic source for this would be Architectural Graphic Standards... both theory and application...
