I read about an Owner Builder Summer Camp a few years ago in a Fine Homebuilding book on small houses. The camp was about six weeks long, cost a few thousand dollars, and prepared first-time builders to build their own homes. It was a basic, hands-on, crash course. Does anyone know of such a summer camp that is still in existance?

Thanks. I don't think it was this school, but it looks great; I've bookmarked it for future reference. Have you participated in their classes?
No, I haven't participated in any of their classes. You might want to get in touch with Fine Homebuilding -- perhaps someone on staff remembers the article you are thinking of and can provide more information. Here's a link to the magazine's Contact the Staff page:

Thanks, Ruth, you have given me a couple of good directions to pursue. I e-mailed Fine Homebuilding today.
I just happen to be reading "More Small Houses" and have seen the story you mention. ("A Small House on a Rocky Hillside" - June/July 1993.)
The author mentions Owner Builder Summer Camp in Nevada City, California, which was apparently shut down sometime after this article appeared - see here (http://lists.cohousing.org/archives/cohousing-l/msg02979.html) for more.
Good luck!

Thanks. I did find some more info on owner-builder classes in the book, "Build Your Dream House for a Song". There are several of different types across the country, including workshops in rammed earth building, straw bale, adobe, cobb, etc.
Glad that was of use to you. And thanks for the tip - I'll keep an eye out for the book you mentioned!

Wow! This was one of the best sites yet; I want to sign up for classes now.
