I’ve got a job where I have to repaint a steel Bilco bulkhead. (I hate painting). It’s near the coast (think salt air and salt fog) so it’s starting to rust. It was new in 2000 and was painted with a coat of Hammerite. Don’t know if it was painted under ideal conditions, temp. humidity etc.
Anyway, I go to the paint store and ask as to what’s the best stuff to use. The guy says right here it is. It’s Hammerite Rust Stop or Hammerite Rust Block or something like that. So I buy a quart.
Later in the day I run into a guy who used to be a painter at General Dynamics in Groton Ct. where they make the nuclear submarines. He says use a zinc chromate primer then put any kind of paint over that. Sherwin Williams sells two versions of those primers.
Any suggestions as to what would be the best (as in longest lasting) paint/primer system to use.
Thanks, I’ve got to run now so I’ll check this tomorrow.

If it has only started to rust after six years the paint system has worked well especially in a coastal environment. The zinc chromate primer is a good choice but even this will eventually show rust.
For a slightly longer lasting solution there are two possibilities'
you could try a cold galvanizing treatment such as this:
http://www.wrmeadows.com/wrm00040.htm
or you could try a marine primer system like this:
http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa/default.asp
follow this with a quality top coat.
Unfortunately there is no quick fix solution and some elbow grease is required

When I called Sherwin Williams, they said they had two products, but since they were only looking in the computer, when I actually went there, they had no product, and none in the region and none in Cleveland.
The sales guy there said that the zinc chromate primer would be my best choice, but He didn't know how I could get it.
I'm now confused. It says Sherwin williams on the sign out front, on his shirt and in his computer which lists the primer, but he says he doesn't know how to get it?
I guess I'll explore another company.
Couple years back I looked high and low for a zinc chromate primer and came up nil. Then called all over the place and was told it was listed as from out of the country and not available.
Then last month I was in a store some where and there it was but I'm sorry but I don't recall where it was at.
So apparently it is available stateside. Keep calling and search the web.
