PAINT: is it oil or latex??
I am having a DUH moment. (Well, longer that a moment. DUH week?)
A painter showed me how to tell if the existing paint is oil or latex, all the better to select the correct product and avoid a failure.
But, I forgot. Something about rubbing alcohol on it?
What is the trick or tricks?

Mineral spirits will eat oil based paint but for the most part won't cut latex paint. Rub some miniral spirits onto it (in an inconspicuous spot). if it starts to dizolve it, it's oil based.
Denatured alcohol will eat latex paint but won't cut oil based. Do the same test. If it softens it up, then it's latex, if not it's probably oil. I say probably because there are also laquer-based paints out there as well as epoxy based paints, but for the most part if you are working in residential, you won't run into those.
Moisten a clean rag or cotton swab with rubbing alcohol. Rub it on the paint in an inconspicuous place. If some paint comes off it's latex.
Thanks, guys!
To help remember: Oil for oil and alki for latex.
I'll tuck that away with: Rightie, tightie; leftie, loosie - (unless it's your circ saw.)The ToolBear
