A friend wants me to turn 100 or so spindles for thier house on the coast of Maine. I would like to use either spanish cedar or philippine mahogany, being that they are readily available to me at a decent price. In talking with them, they want to know the best way to finish the spindles. Do these two woods hold paint or stain differently? And for that environment, what is the best wood and it’s best finish? They want to see white color as the end result. I might have the handrail made from one of these woods also, but the columns will probably be pine, and supplied by the local carpenter.
