My home was finished in 1979 and it was spray painted throughout the interior. Over the years, from time to time, when rolling on new paint (including primers), the paint peels off all the way back to the wallboard. This has occured even when the surface had been painted after the original. Anybody have a feel as to why this happens and is there anything I can do to stop this in future paintings?

I would guess that this is the fault of the original paint job.
Sounds like a super cheap original paint or perhaps something occurred to place a light film on the wallboard prior to painting back in '79 and it's taken this long to reveal itself.
Have there ever been moisture problems in the home?
I've seen that happen when drywall gets painted without being primed first
