I have a new IPE deck with primed cedar railing.
I’d like to know what is the best way to seal the IPE decking.
Also, what would everyone recommend for painting/staining the cedar railing (white). I want something that will last as long as possible. I have used Cabot stain on PT railing before and was never that happy with its durability. Is that as good as it gets?
Thanks,
ken

I can tell you what NOT to use on the Ipe: Cabots Australian Timber Oil. Didn't even last 6 months on my deck in Northern California. If the rain ever stops I need to refinish it, so I'm looking forward to the responses.
I know that a lot of BT'ers are fans of Waterlox, but due to emissions laws you can only get quarts in California, hard to find and $$$.
Penofin works real good on the IPE but costs about $ 38.00 a gallon also there is Messmers that works well and is a little cheaper For cedar seal it with an oil based primer meant to seal cedar and then use a solid oil based stain
Thanks for the info.Do you have recommendations on a good sealer for cedar?
I would recommend Penofin also. They have a special sealant for "exotic" hardwoods. I can get you a picture of the first deck that I treated w/Penofin from 5 years ago that still looks as good as the day it was finished. It is a Evergrain deck w/cedar 6x6 posts. There is a full southern exposure and it is located in Kansas City MO where we get all of the extremes of weather.(100+ in the summer w/90% humidity down to -10 to-15 w/ wind chills much lower during the winter.
