I own an older 1 1/2 story brick house and right now it is painted white. I would like to strip off the paint to expose the original red brick and am wondering the best way. I have heard not to sand blast for it pits the brick and will cause the brick to deteriorate faster. Any other suggestions?

thanks for the response but what kind of pressure are we talking here? Is the type of pressure washer needed something I kind find at a rental outlet? i.e. Home Depot etc.
*One thing you may want to think about is the likelihood that the paint chips that will be removed may contain lead. Washing this stuff away will contaminate the soil below, and may be more trouble than it is worth.I have heard that there is a new product on the market (sorry, I don't know its name) that works similarly to the typical paint removers that are typically applied to old furniture. The difference is that the material is applied and covered with a backing paper, and as the paint releases from the surface, it adheres to the backing paper. I've watched a masonry structure in town be stripped of several layers of paint using this product, and it looked slick. You may ask around, or perhaps somebody else that reads this will know more.

Scott is talking about Peel Away. They have 8 or 9 different strippers for different apps. I just used Peel Away 7 to strip 7 layers of paint off my Aluminum body step van and it worked great.
The problem with brick is that it is so porous it is usually very difficult to get 100% of the paint off, though I've yet to try the Peel Away.
As for the pressure washer you would probably need at least a 4 or 5,000 psi with a waterblaster tip. You should find it at a contractors rental store. Again, with the porsity of the brick I've never had great luck with a pressure washer, but it may be woth a shot.
If you're real serious about stripping the brick, you might end up using a combination of the peel away then the washer. You may just have to experiment.
Here's the Peel Away address:
