What is the best way to paint 1950’s era white aluminum siding? our
siding has weathered over the years to the point that the white paint is
oxidized and showing a faint hint of the aluminum substraight. I’ve
seen articles recomending thorough cleaning and surface [reparation,
then priming the siding with a diluted metal primer, then applying a top
coat of quality latex house paint. Other articles don’t mention the
need to prime, and just go with the paint. As a Fine HomeBuilding
subscriber, I thought I’d ask the definitive experts.

Just helped my son a couple of years ago refinished his 50+ yr old alluminum siding. After a good power wash, we used Sherwin-Willaims Duration paint. Quite pricey, but store salesperson said that we wouldn't need a primer. We applied two coats by hand using a 6" pad (the old wide aluminum siding) and the siding looks great now. If you go with it, be careful getting the paint on your hands. Even though it's a latex, it's a b*tch getting the "stuff" off your hands. jimz
Before you paint the aluminum, look underneath and see if you've got something nicer worth painting under there. Aluminum is getting pretty good prices at the scrap yard these days.

>>Aluminum is getting pretty good prices at the scrap yard these daysAre you serious, is it worth bringing it to a salvage shop?
Versus throwing it away? Yes. I keep a pile and when I haul my copper scrap, I take the alum. also. It's been pretty high recently. Whole house of alum siding = 3-4 gallons of paint.Birth, school, work, death.....................

Duration Coatings from Sherwin Williams is an excellent product but may need a bonding primer. Sherwin Williams carries Prep Rite bonding primer that will stick to about anything. I would scrub the siding first with a cleaner such as Jomax or Challenger. These cleaners can be added to tree/shrub dial sprayers that go on the end of the hose. Use a deck brush that goes on the end of an extention pole. Power wash, prime and apply the Duration. The primer may be tinted close to the color of the top coat for better coverage. Be careful not to apply in direct sun-light in warm temperatures. Spraying gives the best looking results and if the surface is prepared right it will last for years to come.
Pay to put it in the dump or get paid to keep it out of the dump.
