I have a nice cedar deck that is only a few years old, but it gets a LOT of sun. I have put a couple of coats of stain on it each year, but it wears off so fast and all the wood, although in good shape, is drying out, cracking and turning grey. Is painting cedar a better alternative for a longer and more durable finish?

If you like to paint every year then paint your deck.
Cedar likes to breathe.
Use a transparent oil based stain like Penofin or SuperDeck.
If you have already used a semi transparent stain there are companies that can strip it down to the original wood again.
Then re-stain with the transparent stain.
good luck!
