I hate to even think about this project but will have to do it after the holidays. I have plywood kitchen cabinets badly in need of refinishing. They were originally stained and are dark. I will want to paint them a light color of the wifes choosing.
What are the preparation steps and the best type of paint to use. Can I brush it on or use a roller or do I have to get them sprayed?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

First you have to clean them with a non-butyle cleaner. You can paint them with a brush and or a roller or spray. Be sure you go to a paint store and get a paint that is for that applications. If you spray be sure that what you are spraying is not a material that is in conflict with the old finish. It is a pretty big job & if you had to have it done it would be expensive.
*Hey ken you might want to use Ben Moore Fresh Start primer(oil based ) and then I would use Ben moore interior aquavelvet latex semigloss for cleanable surface ! Maybe even Bin for first coat primer! Steve
*Just did the exact same project at home. We washed the entire cabinets with TSP then sanded them lightly to rough up the finish and then wiped down. Primed with a superior binding primer (Bullseye 123 from General Paint) and then Kitchen and Bath Latex...two coats. Is holding up no problem.TDC
*Ken,I've had good luck using a liquid sander like paso then two coats of oil thinned about 10% so it lays out well. I cut in with a brush then roll all the flats with a foam roll like the 3 inch one Whizz makes. I use oil because it lays out better. A good scuff with a red scotch bright before the paso doesn't hurt either. Good luck. Matt
*even though i am a carpenter ... have done several kitchen cabinet painting jobs... wiped down with lacquer thinner to get em good and clean... masked everything (used cardboard to mask off insides of cabs) painted using porch floor enamel, then replaced all the painted hinges with new ones that covered the footprint of the old ones... for the effort and expense involved, had real happy clients.E
