I just replaced a flush interior door in a house I am rehabing. The closest match I could find is a relatively cheap door with a lauan facing. The grain on the facing looks fairly open. Does anyone know if lauan grain shows through paint? Do I need to fill the grain with some sort of filler before priming and painting? I want the door to match the other doors which have a very smooth surface.

Yes, it will. I suggest mixing Elmer's wood glue 50/50 with water as a sandi9ng sealer. Apply / sand / repeat as needed for the sheen you want. Then seal it all with a matte polyurethane before painting.
What you need - although I guess it's too late - is a masonite hardboard door. This is what you are likely trying to match.
I can still get them in this neck of the woods,,,,, and have hung maybe a dozen over the past few years.
I'm in the greater Toronto area.
Best of luck, H
Wood,
Thin coat with drywall mud, sand, Prime and paint.
I have done this with doors, cabinet doors and cabinet ends, works great.

I've done what the good doctor (in the previous post) has done and it worked fine.

I am surprised--I thought the mud would powder over time from movement and jarring. (I have use mud on woodwork at times and it worked okay, though.)
Prime the door with shellac or Kilz shellac based primer. Sand lightly with 320 paper after two coats of primer, then paint. No filler is needed.
