need to paint masonite siding, circa 1965, how is the best way to prime this substrata and finish......? Is a conventional oil primer appropiate or is acrylic a better choice??? also there is some degradation where the existing siding meets the shingles on this bi-level......any solutions?????

I have masonite siding on my house, and have always used the oil base primer since it is what is recommended by masonite corp. Acrylic is not as good for sealing out moisture. Make sure to heavily prime the bottom edges where water can soak in. Unfortunately the siding gets mushy spots and delamination anyway and the only cure is to replace the damaged sections. I have found no way to patch it once this happens. Masonite should never have been used for siding houses in the first place. If you have the clapboard style masonite it is easy to replace. If you have 4x8 sheets, I would remove it to check for water damage, then reside with a better product.
