just built a sign holder for displaying rendering of a spec house we’re starting. i used pvc plumbing pipe as columns for the legs of the structure with a hip roof over the display panel. it’s going to look really great. now i need to paint the whole unit and am wondering what kind of primer and paint to use that would be ok for wood and pvc or are different types needed for each different surface. i would really appreciate knowledgable advice as this will be exposed to weather and i would like the paint job to last as long as possible. thanks for the help.

a jones,
The only way I've ever found to get paint to stick to pvc (and not for very long) is to prime it with a water-based contact adhesive, such as 30-NF. Or, paint it all with purple primer.

*We used to build high powered lights for cave diving and spray painted the housings with a black crackle finish. The solvent based spray would bond extremely well with the PVC. We never found it necessary to prime first, just make sure the PVC is clean.
*I would sand all the pvc first, then paint it with the purple primer and let it have several days to cure.
*Sand it and use something like XIM's bonding primer. It works on glass and other hard to bond surfaces like PVC.Barry
