The asphalt shingle shed roof over my garage is just over 1/12 pitch. The roof deck measures 29×45. Needless to say it leaks in a bunch of spots and all along the eave on the low side due to the lack of slope and/or proper roof covering. The garage is connected to a barn of the same width and a nice 9/12 gable roof. Eventually I am going to make the garage roof match the barn roof but it is not a priority right now.
The shingles look like they are 15-20 years old, maybe more. They are not curling or bubbling. I don’t know what was used for underlayment. The roof is framed out with 2×10’s and plywood (assuming 5/8) with a 3 ply LVL beam at the center of the span. The framing is not rotten yet but it is on its way.
I want to patch the garage roof somehow to keep the water out for a couple years until I can build it to match the barn. I would like to keep the temp repair as cheap as possible. What is my best bet?
Thanks

Poly tarp.
Wind
Put old tires on the tarp so that it won't blow away.
you should tear those shingles off and put down a synthetic underlayment and then roll roof it if you are going to be changing the pitch.
Get a hundred or so gallons of free latex paint off CL or from your local recycle center.
Pour it on the roof, thick. Works for me.
Even my main house roof is sealed with latex paint. 3 layer hot tar roof and some roll roofing, 40years old, paint keeps it fresh and leak free. 2000 sq ft roof, 3/12 slope, put 2 coats of 60 gal each coat on it 2 years ago, may need another hundred gallons in about 5 years. Pour 5 gal out near the top, spread with push broom, works great.
If you are out in the sticks away from a population center, free latex paint in quantity is probably hard to come by.
Seattle area, have not bought paint of any type for over 30 years, always have a few hundred gallons on hand for just such uses. Can always find the colors you need for 'decent' uses also with a 'stockpile'.
Put down two layers of poly tarp so you can forget about it for longer. In the meantime, impress the neighbors by dressing up the old tires by putting some potted flowers in them.
Cactus do well on roofs in old tires, but they really can be problematic if they blow over in the wind and the needles puncture the tarps. So, it might be better to just paint the tires blue to blend in with the tarps.
I'm kinda with JunkHound on this one -- glop the roof somehow. Maybe the latex paint, maybe the cheapest "roof coating" you can find.
Tarp sounds pretty good. I will probably use the current roof deck as the floor of the attic when I build the gable roof over it. Tarp is easy to take off when the time comes. Might just use furring strips to hold the edges of the tarp to the roof deck.
