I’m looking at a job to do some repair on basement walls. There is a cement foundation wall then brick on top (or on the finished side) of that. Homeowner wants to do repairs and make the walls smooth. I guess I’m thinking of skim coating over the brick with mortar. It won’t be perfectly smooth like drywall. Maybe a plasterer could, but I don’t have that kind of experience.
Are there any better or more efficient ways to do that? I guess we need a relatively smooth wall before we can paint on the dry-lok.
Thanks

I'm thinking you may need some wire mesh nailed on to the brick first. Similar to the way stucco would be applied.
Yeah, that makes sense. I wonder if there's an easy way to shoot the fasteners in to hold the mesh. Also I would soak down the wall prior to coating it, much like patching concrete. Get the old stuff wet so it doesn't draw away the moisture from the patch. Then the patch doesn't hold. I suppose I could use my PAT and use nails with the big washers on them. I'll have to experiment. Got me thinking now. Ooooh, that's dangerous.

The stucco guys shoot their wire lath on with a PAT. Short nails, small loads
