Pattern(s) for exposed rafter tails behind gutters/fascia?
Hi
I am looking for patterns or photos of Craftsman style exposed rafter tails BEHIND a gutter and fascia. I can find lots on the web for gutterless/fascia-less eves but basically none for behind a gutter. Our climate dictates a gutter. The issue is the tail needs to maintain a large portion of the plumb cut for attaching the fascia.
The rafter tails will be false 2x8s @ 24″ spacing simply scabbed on to the real rafters (same size and spacing). With a 24 inch overhang I could fit a couple of scallops along the under side.
Anyway any photos or patterns would be appreciated.

How about a scallop type profile on the bottom edge of the rafter tail between the backside of the fascia and the house ?

I think what you want is some sort of "corbel" or "bracket", installed under the rafter tail. Perhaps something like this: http://www.prowoodmarket.com/product_images/z/261/Wooden_Corbel_23_9x6__51818_zoom.jpg , though somehow adapted to the slope of your rafter. There are a couple of installed examples (though not great ones) on this page: http://www.foolimandsons.com/Corbels.html
In keeping with Craftsman design you want it to be simple and appear to be structural. (Though keep in mind you also want it to not provide a roost for birds.) The classic Craftsman approach would likely be a full knee brace, but that's a bird magnet, and likely "heavier" than you want.
