Pavers over existing concrete walkway
Hi Guys,
I would like to put pavers over my existing concrete walkway. I would prefer to mortar them in place instead using sand. Any comments, suggestions or words of doom would be appreciated.

wont your sidewalk be sitting 4" or so above ground ?
how do you plan to deal with that ?
My current walkway is 2" below my garden/mulch line, so when I'm done my walkway should be 2 to 2.5 " above my garden/mulch line.
Try to get the concrete joints to line up with a grout line, not in the middle of a paver. If the concrete has cracked in the exp. jnt. like its supposed to, that will transmit the crack up and crack the paver when it moves. The crack will be less noticable in a grout line. Hope that helps.
Same old lurker, new profile.
Either way will work. I covered an old concrete patio with pavers and we used 1/2" of sand as the base. After two years it still looks great with no movement I can detect. One advantage of sand is that cracks in the concrete are not transmitted upward. The thickness of standard pavers is 2 1/4" so the whole deal shouldn't raise the surface more than 3". On a sidewalk, the edges have to be restrained with either soil, concrete, or a prefab edging strip.
Thanks for the info,
Rick
