Here’s a couple of qs for you. You have a problem with a name-brand door or window, and it needs some attention from the manufacturer. The lumberyard salesman, the distributor salesman, no one can handle it unless you can see the manufacturer’s rep on site.
They send the territory sales manager. Whaddya think he or she grosses each year?
Here’s another one. You want to order a custom entry door, one made by one of the high end boutique places that does them in mesquite to mahogany, and everywhere in between. You’re gonna deal with an inside salesperson, probably female. Whaddya think she’s grossing?

Gene,
I know a few of those folks in my area and those are $40-60k a year jobs. Could be fun but could also be a big headache as they cover alot of territory. I can think of nothing less fun than to drive two hours to talk to an unhappy contractor and homeowner about a defective window.
And you know why they often hire females (and attractive ones) don't you? Sure, you do. Its because most of us guys will not get upset with a pretty gal when something goes amiss but if it were a guy, we'd chew his !$%^ head off!
Sexist yes, but true.
Mike
I thought it was cuz they could pay them less...DOH!!I don't Know what I am doing
But
I am VERY good at it!!
Another interesting point is due to cutbacks, many companies don't even have field reps any more.
I had some trouble with some ____ brand shingles a few years back and called the headquarters about them. They sent a packet on what they wanted done and I had to pull 3 shingles off the roof, take pictures and UPS them to their plant! Said they had too many claims and minor grievances to have field guys up on a roof all day long. But they did honor my claim and covered the cost of the replacements.
