Does anyone have advice on the kind or brand? Cabot and Sikkens seem to be the most recommended generally. The Cabot rep said the water based finishes were more durable and fade resistant but when I asked he said most contractors use oil based so now I’m confused. Also, does it make sense to use a cheaper product for a fence? I’ll be using a darker stain for the cedar and either no stain or a light stain for the redwood.
This is for a cedar/redwood fence (cedar grape stake field framed with redwood rails and stiles) but I’d like to figure this out generally.

Check Consumer Reports July, '05. They rated penetrating deck treatments.
Best clear was Olympic Waterguard.
I'd be glad to fax you the ratings if ya want.
