Does anyone have experience with Penofin finish? I plan to use it on a redwood deck, which I would like to keep from graying in the intese So. Cal. sun. They claim good UV blocking, especially in their “marine” finish. Is the product worth the money?
Per a response in another posting, I checked Consumer Reports from last year. Unfortunately, they applied each finish once, and then left them outside with no upkeep, so I don’t think their findings are too relevant (and they didn’t do Penofin.) I’m pretty much resigned to reapplication yearly, or every other year at the longest. Does anyone have a favorite finish, or experience with Penofin this kind of application?
Thanks.

I have used Penofin (cedar) for 11 years on my siding and decks in Wisconsin. It is a very good stain but still requires frequent reapplication to keep the wood looking good. I stain my decks yearly (after cleaning them with a bleach mixture and a pressure washer) and they look as good as the day I built them. I have stained the siding about every 3 years to keep it looking nearly new. It is worth the extra money (you get what you pay for). I think Sikkens is probably better (and more expensive) but I doubt you could get more than a year on a deck without some deterioration.
My next house will have concrete pads for decks and maintenence free siding.
*Wow! That's a lot of labor for upkeep.Anyone heard of "Superdeck"? A penetrating oil (that's what "penofin" comes from) that a local lumberyard is pushing as an alternative to Cabot et al.In harsh sun, I'd use a synthetic decking. Life's too short to be spent swabbing the deck. Now, if you can afford to have someone else do it...
*This time around I'm using Superdeck. Much more reasonable than Penofin and made by the guy who originally came up with the Penofin formula. I bought 5gal. cans at $80 each versus $120 for Penofin.
*No personal experience, I'm all bluestone outside, however...The latest issue (June 99) of Consumer Reports evaluates a variety of "deck treatments."For what it's worth...
*I found the CR article incomprehensible. Golly, the 7-month exposure treatments are performing far better than the ones that have been out for 32 months. Go figure.
