In the post *#* RFH Ranch *#* there was a short question/answer about the construction of the pent roof. This got me thinking about the addition of a pent roof over a large multi casement window on the north gable side of our house. Now would be a good time to add the roof, since we still need siding due to a porch addition.
My question is about creating the correct pent roof size to window proportion. Is there a rule of thumb for the pitch/height on a pent roof that is placed just over a window?
I assume it would depends on the projection from the wall, the size of the window and maybe the roof pitch for the rest of the house. I have seen bay window roofs that are rather steep and other pent type roofs attached to the side of a house that look way to thin for their projection. What would your suggestion be for the following window so it looks proportional. (See photo)
The window is 8.5′ wide and 6′ high, it has five 18″ wide casements, four are operable and one center stationary. I was thinking it should have at least a 18″ overhang, so the windows could be open during a light rain. What pitch or height do you think would create a pleasant looking pent roof over this window?
If it matters, the main gable roof that runs above the window is about 5/12. This gable roof is a addition off a hipped one story ranch.
I attached a photo of the back of the house, the window in question the one to the right
Thanks

Greetings kwik,
This post, in response to your question, will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again which will increase it's viewing.
Perhaps it will catch someone's attention that can help you with advice.

In general, the pitch of the pent roof will match the pitch of the house. It can project as far out as you want. In your case I would either bring it out as far as the rake overhang, or up to twice the rake overhang. Once you get too far out it looks better with some sort of support under it like a bracket or a corbel.
One way is to go about 6" past the fly rafter. Here's your picture that I just modified a little.
