I’ve got a couple issues I’m wrestling with and hoping for some inspired input here.
I’m going to be installing a pergola over one end of an existing deck which stands 10′ off the ground.
The deck is framed with PT, 6×6 posts, 2×10 joists on 16″ centers, ledger attached to rim joist, decked with 5/4 x 6 Ipe decking. Entire deck is 15′ deep from house, about 26′ wide.
House is a Ryan home with vinyl siding.
The plan is for an Ipe pergola approx 13′ square (with 2’overhang) at one end of deck.
I’m hoping to use 4×6 Ipe posts, let through the decking and resting on top of the 6×6 posts for three corners. 2×8 beams for pergola will run perpendicular to house, with 2×6 joists on 16″ centers running parallel to house.
Problem is 4th post next to house near center of deck. I don’t want to have to dig another footer right next to house under deck and then use an 18′ post (if I can even find one in Ipe).
Can I add extra joists/other framing support running from deck ledger to beam underneath to support fourth post. Should I try and tie the end of the pergola beams to the wall framing somehow (2×4 on 16″ centers) or is there something else I’m missing.
Also, assuming I rest the other three posts on top of the PT framing and use blocking & bolt them into the deck framing well, will this work.
I’ve been spending way too much time thinking about this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, just beef up your framing under that post. By definition, a pergola does not handle a live load, only the dead load of its own material
