I have a tankless water heater, the brass fittings on the hot side have a bit of a problem. I assume it’s due to the expansion and contraction of the fittings – it’s an outside-mounted water heater. Can one of you pros recommend a pipe dope that will stop the leaks? The installer put teflon tape on the joints and I’m getting nervous about tightening it any more – afraid I’ll break something.

I'm not a pro plumber, but the trick I've used is to use teflon paste with teflon tape OVER it. And dope the threads on the female side while you are at it.
I would likely use Rectorseal pipe dope. However, I would recommend using both the pipe dope and the teflon tape. Belt and suspenders.
I apply my dope first and then place a couple/few wraps of the tape over that. Never had a leak with this combination. I have heard that some recommend the other way around, but I see no reason to change what has always worked without fail.
Thanks guys, I'm off to the hardware store tomorrow.
