Had a request for a pet door, the type that fits in a sliding patio doorwall. Does anyone have experience with these? Is there a better unit than the Hale? Need to have a quality, semi-permanent mount, that can be cut to exact opening size, not an adjustable one. Thanks.

In the door or wall? Or one of those inserts that take up some of the door opening spacce?
Yeah, I got the one from Hale. The one that requires a corner to be cut out of the glass.
Works great for the dog.
I like the style because I had another exactly the same size door removed for a french outswinger. This gives me a backup in case I sell the place to someone without dogs, or such a big dog. I can easily slip in the spare door in such a case. Can't do that with a slab door.
Problem I have with it is security. The damn shepard requires a big door. Big enough for a smaller person to slip inside. Or a bigger one to reach up inside to unhook the door lock.
The plastic door will cloud up quickly and get dirty from the dog's back. The company will give you a new one within a year to cover for the fact. You can keep a throw rug just one the inside to keep things clean. I've had real good luck with that.

isn't there an eletronic lock that connects to the dog's collar to unlock the door?

Not with my model.
I'm interested in that style for a planned pull out of the sliders and replacing with a window.
If you have a shepherd I can't imagine you worrying about someone coming in through the dog door!Let's not confuse the issue with facts!
Haven't you noticed the fine print on most pet door cartons saying 'for interior use only'?
No I missed that since I had them do the installation.
But it sounds like one of those lawyer things...
There are insulated doggy doors designed to go through a door or wall. They have two flaps like a mini mud room. There are doors that open and shut in response to a signal from the transmitter on the pets color. Lots of money!
Where do we get information about them?
Just Google Pet doors. Many pages of choices. Home Depot has the double insulated ones.

Had a skunk get through mine once. You can imagine the look on my face when I opened the door to "the dog room" and saw mister strippety back. I said OoooKay I'll just back outta here real slow and we'll all be fine. Had to get rid of the door because skunks are real quick learners.
